Course programme

Part 1
Drafting the Trousers Block
We’ll begin by drafting a classic trousers block using size 12 industry-standard measurements. A basic block is the foundation for all future pattern designs — once you have it, you can adapt it into endless styles. You'll learn step-by-step how to build this essential template and how it serves as a starting point for creating your own designs.
Part 2
Pattern Adaptations & Culottes
Then we'll look at how to turn your trousers block into different styles using simple pattern changes. You’ll also learn how to use a skirt block to create a culottes pattern, an option to add to your skills.

Everyone will work with the same standard size 12 in class to keep things clear and easy to follow. Guidance will be given on how to adapt the block for different sizes, so you can continue creating custom patterns at home.
Why Use a Standard Size 12?
To ensure a smooth learning experience, all participants will work with the same size 12 industry-standard measurements. This approach allows us to focus on the core principles of pattern cutting without the complexities of individual measurements. However, you’ll also learn how to take accurate measurements and apply them to create personalised, made-to-measure blocks. This dual approach ensures you leave the workshop with the skills to adapt patterns to any size.

FAQ
  • Do I need to take the 5-week Pattern Cutting course first?
No, it's not required, but it's recommended. This workshop is a natural follow-on from the 5-week course and builds on the same approach. If you’ve done it, you’ll find it easier to follow – but beginners are also welcome.
  • Will I be working with my own measurements?
To keep the class smooth and easy to follow, all participants will draft using a size 12 industry-standard block. However, you’ll learn how to adapt the block to different sizes, so you can later create custom patterns at home. This approach allows the focus to remain on mastering the core principles of pattern cutting without the complexity of individual measurements.
  • Do I need to bring anything?
All materials and tools will be provided. Just bring a notebook if you’d like to take notes.
  • Will I go home with a finished pattern?
Yes, you’ll take home your completed trousers block, culottes pattern, and any design adaptations you work on during the session. You’ll also receive a printed handout with step-by-step instructions, so you can continue practising at home with confidence.
