Varnishing your alcohol ink artwork is an essential step that not only preserves the beauty of your piece but also enhances its appearance. However, varnishing requires care and attention to detail to achieve the best results. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you protect your alcohol ink art with a flawless finish.

Step 1: Choose the Right Varnish
Selecting the appropriate varnish for your alcohol ink artwork is crucial. Look for a clear, non-yellowing spray varnish that offers UV protection. Varnishes come in different finishes, such as gloss, satin, and matte, so choose one that complements your artwork’s style. Gloss varnish is ideal for adding depth and vibrancy, especially if you used gold, while satin and matte finishes provide a softer, more understated look.

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace
Before you begin, make sure your workspace is clean and free of dust. Any particles that settle on your artwork during varnishing can become trapped in the varnish, creating imperfections. Work in a well-ventilated area to ensure that fumes from the varnish do not accumulate. Lay down a protective cloth or polyethylene sheet covering on your work surface.

Step 3: Clean Your Artwork
Gently wipe your artwork with a soft brush or use a hair dryer on a cool, low setting
to remove any dust or debris. Avoid using water or any cleaning agents, as these can reactivate the inks. A clean surface ensures that the varnish adheres properly and that
your artwork remains pristine.

Step 4: Apply the Varnish
Shake the varnish can well to mix the contents. Hold the spray can about 8-12 inches
from your artwork and apply the varnish in light, even coats. Start with a thin first coat
to avoid drips and allow it to dry completely before applying additional coats. Typically,
2-3 coats are sufficient for most pieces.

Step 5: Allow Proper Drying Time
Let each coat dry thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid
touching or moving the artwork until it is completely dry to prevent smudging or other
damage. Drying times can vary depending on the type of varnish used, the thickness of
the application, and environmental factors like humidity and temperature.

Step 6: Inspect and Store
Once your final coat is dry, inspect the artwork under good lighting to ensure an even finish without any missed spots. If everything looks good, your piece is ready to be displayed or stored. When storing, place your artwork in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to further preserve its vibrant colours.
